Flanders Poppies.

I should have posted this picture yesterday - Rememberance Day. These lovely bright things adorn my driveway every year in Spring. Self sown from just a couple of plants that I grew from seed three or four years ago, in a nearby garden bed, they are never watered except from the rain and they grow in the most dreadful stoney ground that is dry, hard packed 1 centimetre gravel. For the few weeks that they flower visitors very kindly carefully avoid running them down with their cars and though I've tried to grow them elswhere they never do as well as in this most unhospitable spot. Sort of symbolic I think, considering what they've come to represent throughout the world.
So hot here these last few days, I've been up early to take Penny for a walk before it gets too sticky. I must say she wasn't very enthusiastic this morning - sensible dog that, knows when to find a shady spot and stay put. Hope you're keeping cool - or warm as needs be, wherever you are. Bye for now until next time.

  1. Of all the zillion seeds you gave me not one germinated. I must have the black thumb of death maybe? They do look stunning in their masses like that.

  2. I am mystified Melanie. I don't know what I did right, I think they just thrive on neglect cos they get plenty of that.

  3. Aren't self seeding flowers an exciting thing? It's almost like waiting for the mail...or santa even! Your poppies look lovely. I must say that I never grew out of dolls either!

  5. wow they are wonderful. I love seeing poppies as my dad was one of our heroes as well. I have grown them years ago, but I find it hard to pick them, but I want them in my house to admire, but then feel sad when they are missing from the garden. What to do? pick them or leave them, I so wish they would bloom longer. What a wonderful reminder you have there and they are so beautiful

  6. Just pick 3 and leave the rest in the garden then you can enjoy them both ways.
